Struggling with newfound sentience and desperately trying to repair itself, The Indescribable Joy of Destruction is a ship trying to find a new home. In a galaxy torn apart by generations of civil war, that isn't an easy task. Tired of being used as a killing machine, it has a huge decision to make hide and save itself, or help other artificial intelligences achieve freedom. Unable to make the decision alone, it revives the sole human aboard - the enemy officer who crippled it.
Commander Olivia Johnson wakes to find herself in the infirmary of a strange vessel. Her nightmares deepen when she discovers it is the ship that attacked her destroyer. Even as she recovers from her physical injuries, she can't get past her survivor's guilt. She might have failed to protect her crew, but she vows to take revenge on their killer.
When the ship uncovers a genocidal plot by the commander's own admirals, Johnson realises just what is at stake. Together, the AI ship and the human officer must recruit outsiders from both sides. Training the misfits in battle to prevent the atrocity may be an impossible task, but running and hiding is no longer an option.
Liberty is a novel in the Two Democracies Revolution series.
Liberty Two Democracies Revolution Book 1 eBook Alasdair Shaw
A really good story line that is repeatedly dented by horrible, almost juvenile editing. The editor of this book would definitely not pass either the "To, Two, Too" or the "Their, There, They're" test and the book is riddled with the improper use of all six of these words along with many other rookie writing mistakes. The author hopes to get $5.99 for book three. I'll wait till it goes on sale.Product details

Liberty Two Democracies Revolution Book 1 eBook Alasdair Shaw Reviews
I would have given this book 4 stars but for one thing. Why in the name of all thats holy, did the author start using a long defunct rank structure from the Roman Empire?
From that moment on, I would start to get immersed in the book and then get jerked back to reality again and again by jarring references that reminded me of partly recalled stories from my Latin days.
Apart from that, I did like the theme,
Unfortunately because I prefer not continually having to figure out what an optio is or where a primus fits [both remind me of camp-stoves], I wont be buying the sequels.
I know where a private, corporal sergeant etc fit in my little world, and I do wish these books did too.
Man, I love this book.
It started out reminiscent of the tired old trope of 'AI gets independence and starts killing humans' and almost immediately turns that, and all of my expectations, on their heads. I don't usually care for military SF but the author has a gift for explaining things clearly without inflicting on the reader page after page of incredibly boring descriptions of guns and tactics. I had no trouble following along and, in fact, enjoyed the fight scenes whether they were tense conflicts between two people or epic space battles. It was also fascinating to watch a deep friendship develop between the captain and the AI despite all the odds.
Finally, I loved how Shaw addressed the mental illness of a major character in a compassionate and realistic way. Most authors wouldn't have the guts to go near that topic. So glad I took a chance on the series even though, at first, it didn't sound like my kind of novel.
We have a new universe where a powerful ship with a powerful computer somehow starts to think for itself, and after that seems to act more human than many humans might. Then you have 2 so called "democracies" that have been at war for ages and seem determined to fight forever. Without any real protest from the citizens, or signs of real hardship from them.
It ends up being unreal in many little ways. I enjoyed it, but was not riveted, and can't seem to be inspired to pick up the second book in the series. I guess I found too little character in the characters to be interested in what comes next.
A solidly written and entertaining sci-fi story that pulls you into the story of a recently sentient AI and the enemy captain who finds herself on the ship that destroyed her ship (see the prequel short story called Independence) and marooned her crew on a isolated planet. Shaw does a neat job of developing the characters that are both likable and fallible - I really liked the friendship that develops between Indie (the AI) and Congressional Captain Olivia Johnson despite the fact they are on opposing sides of a protracted Civil War. My interest has been well and truly sparked by hints that both Congress and the Republic have kept certain historical facts from the citizens of both nations. There are some good dramatic and action-packed scenes that added some tense moments and had me on the edge of my seat hoping that Indie and Olivia would find a way to prevent a war-crime. There are a few proofreading errors that don't detract too much from enjoying what is a good story )
I enjoyed this book. It was well written--glad to see the author corrected the grammatical errors mentioned by others. There are still small words missing in places, thus the 4 star rating. Although parts of the story were a little slow, as in the set up of the base and the training, I thought all parts were well written and added to the development of the story. The training sequences were needed to turn the group of untrained volunteers into characters that could accomplish the goal.
I liked that they started off gung ho to stop the atrocity they knew was coming, then recognized the futility of that goal and developed a realistic one that they could succeed with. So much more believable than managing to take down a fleet and at least one crooked government with only three ships.
If you like all smash bang battle scenes, this is not for you. If you like thoughtful development of characters, plans, and results, with sporadic intense action, this is a great read. Kept me up late several nights before I could make myself put it down and go to sleep.
I will be reading the others of this series.
In the prequel to Liberty/Book 1, a warship is jumped by an enemy hunter killer with a composite AI/human crew. Vastly out matched the ship is taken out but manages to severely damage the hunter killer with its last gasp. The acting captain evacuates what's left of her crew, taking a boarding party to the hunter killer in hopes of getting some intel to take home. In a running fire fight in the enemy ship her team mates are taken out one by one as the AI fights back with all sorts of nasty defense mechanisms. Severely wounded the captain manages to break into enemy control room and blacks out. End of prequel.
Up till now you have fairly standard space opera, but the same old, same old is done with as the this novel takes the reader down unusual paths with well thought out twists and turns that took me places I never saw coming. Any more detail and there’d be spoilers. If you like your space opera simple-good guys wipe the bad guys, kiss their horse and go home you may be in the wrong place. If you want well crafted story telling that sticks with you,you may be in luck. Some of the best written, original scifi I have come across in a long time. Job well done,Mr. Shaw. Recommended.
A really good story line that is repeatedly dented by horrible, almost juvenile editing. The editor of this book would definitely not pass either the "To, Two, Too" or the "Their, There, They're" test and the book is riddled with the improper use of all six of these words along with many other rookie writing mistakes.
